Design Directions 2008 and Beyond
Eurocucina - Milan
Held biannually, this event is a 'must attend' for all leading appliance manufacturers, as it sets the scene for international emerging trends in kitchen design. The most recent event held in April, was particulary inspiring, with the wealth of talent and creativity on display.
Upcoming kitchen trends from Eurocucina
Integration in kitchen design was pronounced:
- Cabinetry was handle-free and details were kept to a minimum
- Clean cabinetry was given warmth through texture and finish
- Design intent remained uncompromised and breaklines flowed seamlessly
- Appliances are no longer the heroes of the kitchen - often hidden in alcoves covered by electronically operated cabinetry
Detail brought the human element:
- Design was humanised through a balance between hard elements such as stainless steel surfaces and intricate detail
- New and old were mixed
- Stainless steel, glass, and mid-tone timbers were widespread
Lighting was prevalent:
- In-cupboard lighting glowed softly through glass frontages
- LED lighting allowed for versatile lighting adaptations
- Lighting invited added a human element and warmth
Use of true materials:
- Solid metal cabinetry
- Substance material - glass benchtops 8-10mm thick
- Solid 18-20mm timber
- Authentic materials extended throughout cabinetry - inside cupboards and drawers
Texture as an accent:
- Detailed tiled benchtops juxtaposed clean cabinetry
- Handcrafted materials were ubiquitous
- Increased use of 3D pattern release
Spectacular level of craftsmanship:
- Immaculately finished
- Superior design integrity
Appliances spill over into informal spaces:
- Traditional constraints to kitchen appliance placement were broken
KBIS - Chicago
KBIS, is the US version of Eurocucina for bathrooms and kitchens. Whilst the majority of US kitchen design elements remain exclusive to the US, the trends showcased within the show are significant in understanding the evolution of design directions for manufacturers globally.
Upcoming trends to watch
There are distinct regional segments in the US. These regions follow two main schools of design - the traditional and the contemporary.
The traditional was dominant:
- Ornate characteristics
- Dark timbers and granites
- Lots of decoration
Emergence of a new, contemporary styling:
- Much more attuned to international design
- Lead by the new riche in regional areas of the east and west coast, as well as Chicago and the more cosmopolitan cities.
- Designs boasted cleans lines and simplicity
Use of expensive materials:
- Widespread use of Corian, granite, and solid timbers
In the laundry there were some interesting developments:
- Colour - an exploration trend for washing machines and dryers
- Laundry room less of a utility - taken out of the basement and put either in hall cupboards or as an adjunct to the Grand room
